The Elland & District Pool League play World Rules (best of 11 - all singles) and are affiliated to the English Pool Association. It is represented by 2 teams in the West Yorkshire Interleague. We have a winter and a summer league. Our matches take place on Monday nights and our 5 knockout competitions (Team KO, DILLIGAF Cup, Individuals, Doubles, Ladies) take place on Wednesdays.
The Elland & District Pool League was formed in 1977, with one division containing 12 teams. It was then just a winter league. Ken Wheatcroft was the first secretary. The Red Lion (Stainland) were the first league champions. After 2 years Dave Higgins took over and in 1984 a summer league was formed. In 1981 Elland were one of 8 or so founder members of the West Yorkshire County Pool Association. Dave ran the league for a further 10 years, until his job took him to work in London, leaving his wife Shirley to run the league for 2 years. On his return, Dave, was asked to run it again and took over for a further 5 years. He has since gone on to bigger and better things, running competitions for the E.P.A. including national men's and ladies amateur tournaments, as well as World Championships Qualifiers. And then, finally, the World Championships Tournament Director.
At it's peak, the Elland & District Pool League contained 58 teams! Although numbers have dwindled to our current 27 teams, I am working hard to increase numbers once again.
